NEW TO ME DAY

A fall edition of the City of Barrie’s popular New to Me Day has been added in October, to help residents give unwanted items a second life. This event, taking place on October 1, is a chance for residents to place unwanted items, labelled “free” at the curb, for other residents and community members to browse and take for their own use. New to Me Day is like a garage sale, but without the money or hassle.

Apart from finding things for free, you also benefit by cleaning your home of unwanted but useable items, while helping prolong the life of Barrie’s landfill. This helps support a circular economy, which is a movement toward greener, more sustainable options, by considering using items in new ways so they can be reused, and sharing things instead of throwing them out.

Participating in New to Me Day is as easy as 1-2-3:
1. Gather up items around your home that are no longer used, but that other people might like to have
(toys, books, furniture, sporting goods, small appliances, tools, art, etc.)
2. On the morning of Saturday, October 1, put your items at the curb and add the New to Me Day poster (or make your own poster that reads “FREE”)
3. Look for free treasures around your neighborhood!

New to Me runs from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on October 1. Anything that does not find a new home must be taken back in by 9 p.m. that day as there will be no special municipal collection.
